A familiar catalyst

The Nikkei 225 closed at a fresh record on Tuesday, with financials leading the advance after the dollar-yen rate touched 158 in early Asian trade. The Topix banks index jumped 2.4%, its best day since November 2024.

The setup

  • USD/JPY: 158.04, +0.6% on the day
  • Nikkei 225: 41,287, +1.8%
  • Topix banks: +2.4%
  • 10-year JGB: 1.18%, +3 bps

The BoJ's policy statement from Friday, which kept the overnight call rate at 0.50%, has not dampened the carry-trade dynamics that have favored the bank sector since the start of the year. SMFG, MUFG, and Mizuho collectively added CNY-equivalent 4.6 trillion in market cap.

The strategist take

Nomura's chief equity strategist said the move was "a textbook response to a soft-yen, hawkish-Fed mix." Goldman raised its end-2026 Nikkei target to 43,500, citing earnings revisions in financials and a benign macro backdrop.

We see a clear runway for the bank sector through Q3 absent a sharp BoJ pivot. — Goldman Sachs, April 8 note

Risk factors

  • Verbal intervention from MoF officials (last seen at 161.95 in 2024)
  • A surprise hawkish BoJ decision at the April 30 meeting
  • U.S. PCE inflation on Friday
